The firm has handled numerous claims and lawsuits arising out of every hurricane to hit the U.S. in the last decade. We have successfully tried jury trials arising out of commercial property and residential property claims arising out of the four Florida hurricanes of 2004, Katrina (2005), Rita (2005), Wilma (2005), Humberto (2007), Ike (2008), Dolly (2008) and Gustav (2008). The firm has also been working with a number of our insurer clients on claims and lawsuits arising out of both Hurricanes Irene (2011) and Sandy (2012).
In most of the major hurricane litigation over the last decade, the firm’s lawyers have played a major role. For example, two of our lawyers served on the Katrina Insurance Umbrella Steering Committee which oversaw thousands of Katrina cases across Louisiana. Chris Martin also served on the Carrier Steering Committees for Hurricane Ike in both Galveston County and Harris County and helped formulate the standing orders and protective orders governing all hurricane property damage suits in both counties. The firm represented one of the nation’s largest P&C carriers in the Hurricane Ike MDL in Texas. The firm also represents the Texas Windstorm Insurance Association regarding hurricane claims in Texas.
The firm works with CAT operations of several major P&C companies to provide adjuster and management training regarding hurricane claims. Our lawyers have dealt will all of the major coverage and causation issues arising out of the last decade of storms including appraisals, wind vs flood issues, shingle damage, business interruption losses, property damage to structures and unique personal property, ALE, prompt payment of claim issues, and many more. We are not aware of any other law firm in the country who has defended more hurricane cases in jury trials over the last decade as the lawyers of MDJW.
